FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
For each new customer, I set up an introductory call to learn about research goals, discuss research already conducted (if applicable), review budget and deadlines, and determine next steps. After the initial call, I draft a contract that outlines the scope of the project, including the costs, timeline, and all necessary details.
I also share a more formal information sheet to gather background information. Upon receiving a signed contract, a completed information sheet, and a financial deposit, I begin work on the project.
I provide regular status updates via email to the client. Upon completion, I provide the promised deliverables (typically a written report or some other takeaway). The deliverables will be emailed, then discussed in person, over the phone, or via Skype or Zoom, depending on the client's preference, to address any questions or comments.
What do your rates include?
My rates are for services only, meaning my time communicating with you, conducting research, analyzing the information and packaging the findings.
My rate does not cover out-of-pocket expenses that may arise during the course of the research phase. This includes costs for photocopies, postage, vital record orders, transportation fees, parking fees, tolls, and other reimbursable expenses.
All out-of-pocket expenses are discussed in advance and agreed upon before incurring them. A breakdown of any out-of-pocket expenses are also included in the final invoice.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept payment in multiple forms: cash, check, Paypal, or Venmo.
Do you guarantee results?
Your desired results cannot be guaranteed by any genealogist. The genealogist's job is to conduct sound research within the scope of the project (based on budget and agreed upon hours).
As a customer, you are hiring a genealogist for his/her expertise in research and analysis of the findings, but no genealogist can guarantee that he/she will find the answer.
A reputable genealogist will outline what research steps were taken, the resources searched and share the outcome of those findings. An answer can never be promised or guaranteed.
Why should I hire you if I can just use free genealogy sites?
While many free sites are great resources, genealogy is more involved than just searching for a name and automatically finding the right person.
Genealogists are trained to examine and analyze records to confirm the validity of the information and make sure the document truly belongs to your ancestor. The vast majority of trees on free sites contain incorrect information, unfortunately.
I research the various resources available, analyze the information and correlate the results to ensure it is indeed your ancestor. I also employ strategies that help break down brick walls—those barriers that prevent you from moving forward in your own research.
What happens with my private information?
My contracts ensure the privacy of your information and any information I find on your family. If there was a time I hoped to use your family’s information as a case study in a presentation or article, I am obligated to receive written consent from you first.
